A Speechless Captain: Part 1
By Stephanie Stokell stokell2@ix.netcom.com

Early one morning, Mulan was sitting on her bedroom floor, finishing up a letter she was writing on a piece of manila parchment scroll. She had already done all of her chores earlier and was free to do whatever for the rest of the day. Her Mother and Grandmother were going into town to buy some food and whatever else that might catch their eye, and they were dragging FaZhou along for the ride. “Mulan?” her Grandmother began, poking her head inside the door. “What are you going to do today while were gone and you’re all alone?” “I won’t be alone, GrannyFa.” She replied, rolling up the parchment and sliding a red ribbon securely around it. “Oh, of course of course you have Kahn and Little Brother but-“ She stopped herself as she realized what Mulan meant. “Ooh. Tell me whom you’re invitin’ over. I won’t tell a soul.” GrannyFa whispered. “Promise?” Mulan asked, standing up and walking towards the door.

“Granny’s honor. Now tell me.”

“Captain Shang.” She replied, taking her Magnolia hair comb from a nearby dresser and weaving the ribbon in and out of the teeth to keep it in place.

“You shouldn’t have told me. Now I’ll have to come home early.”

GrannyFa joked. “Have a good time.” Mulan said as she hugged her grandmother. “Goodbye!”

In a few moments she was completely alone. She wasn’t exactly dressed in her best (the shirt, pants and slippers she had worn in her war camp), but Shang wouldn’t see her until later anyway.

So she scooped up Little Brother, mounted Kahn, and headed for Shang’s village.

It only took 15 minutes to get from her village to his, and she was soon at the entrance of his home. She stuffed the scroll under Little Brother’s collar, pointed him towards the door, and gave him a starting push, then high-tailed it back home.
